Almost every modern smartphone and many advanced digital cameras have built-in GPS receivers. When you take a picture, the device queries the global positioning satellite network to find your exact location and embeds those coordinates directly into the photo file. This process is called geotagging, and the saved information is GPS metadata.
How GPS Location is Saved in Image Files
GPS metadata is stored under specialized tag categories within the EXIF block of the image header. It is structured into several technical fields:
- GPS Latitude: The distance north or south of the equator, saved as a set of degrees, minutes, and seconds (DMS), along with a directional reference (‘N’ or ‘S’).
- GPS Longitude: The distance east or west of the prime meridian, saved in DMS format along with a directional reference (‘E’ or ‘W’).
- GPS Altitude: The physical height above sea level, recorded in meters or feet.

Geotagging Coordinate Formats
GPS coordinates in EXIF headers are usually stored as rational numbers representing Degrees, Minutes, and Seconds (DMS), but modern mapping tools convert these to Decimal Degrees (DD).
